VOLUNTEERING, CAMPS &

VOLUNTEERING, CAMPS & RECREATION HERE’S TO A GREAT YEAR OF VOLUNTEERING! MSWA is lucky to have amazing volunteers supporting us in a variety of roles across the organisation. Our volunteers make fundraising events such as the MSWA Ocean Ride and Step Up for MSWA possible, while our niche group of peer support volunteers facilitate coffee groups to provide critical connections and support for our Clients. We also have volunteers based in our offices, Outreach Centres, facilities and Clients’ homes, who commit anywhere from half an hour to 12 hours a week. We can’t thank our volunteers enough for their time, commitment and dedication to making a difference. 2022 was anything but an easy year to navigate for most of us. The WA border opened after a two-year closure and the community had to adhere to changing restrictions and measures to minimise the spread of COVID-19 and its numerous strains. Plans and processes had to be reviewed to best address growing concerns and individuals had to keep pace with these changes as days went by. But despite the ever-changing COVID-19 landscape, our volunteers pressed on and contributed more than 3,300 hours in 2022. On a positive note, we were glad to welcome 10 new volunteers last year, with a third of our new recruits based in the Albany region. We start 2023 with seven positions to fill across Beechboro, Wilson, Hamilton Hill and City Beach and welcome all expressions of interest by those wanting to make a positive impact in their community. Our aim is always to place potential volunteers in positions suited to their skills, goals and interests, in locations most convenient to them. To boost the growth of the MSWA Volunteers Team, we have listened to feedback and will be reviewing and refining our program to encourage greater community participation. Engaging volunteers in our organisation not only provides valuable support for staff, but it also builds a greater awareness, understanding and acceptance of people with neurological conditions in the larger community.
