WILSON OUTREACH NEWS

WILSON OUTREACH NEWS NICOLA RYAN, RESOURCE COORDINATOR DAWN BEAUTIFUL BURKE, QUILTS VOLUNTEER GIFTED COORDINATOR TO MSWA MEMBERS The W.A Quilters Association representative Cathy Robertson, recently visited Wilson Outreach Centre again, bringing with her another two large bags of amazing quilts made by members of their Association. These quilts have been kindly donated to our Members; to brighten their lounge chairs and beds or just to keep their knees warm. Sheila, Narelle and Janice were on hand to pick their favourites from the pile and are thrilled to have them in their possession. The Quilters Association have been friends of MSWA for a few years now. They have generously donated quilts for each resident of our high support accommodation facilities including Fern River, Hamilton Hill and Treendale Gardens, and both respite homes. Cathy said the group thoroughly enjoy passing on their beautiful quilts to community groups like MSWA and has assured us she will be returning with more! These quilts are really beautiful and bring a welcome splash of colour with them. We would like to thank Cathy and her fellow quilters for their ongoing generosity. WILLETTON BUNNINGS SUPPORTING WILSON OUTREACH The wonderful staff from the Bunnings Willetton store have once again visited us at Wilson. They also joined in our Mexican Fiesta happily wearing their sombrero hats! This store has been very generous to us here at Wilson. They have supplied vegetables for our raised garden beds as well as staffers. Bec and her assistant came along to plant them! Member Sheila Hayfield particularly has a love of our garden beds here at Wilson, she can often be seen tending to them whilst here at Outreach. Sheila is pictured here with the Bunnings staff and some of our beautiful, healthy looking vegetables. So far the crop has yielded a dozen or so potatoes, beans and some lovely herbs. Currently there is a fierce competition among our Members, from several Outreach Groups and our residential facilities, which is due to finish at the end of August. We have all been vying for the title “Winner of the best vegetables grown over the winter season”. The results will be reported in the next Bulletin so watch this space!!!! OLA OLA! ‘Mexico’ at Wilson Outreach was a huge success. Staff, volunteers and Members all made a fantastic effort with their costumes and really had a fun time singing and dancing! We were lucky enough to have a visit from ‘Nicko’ who played his piano accordion whilst walking around the atrium! We even had our very own ‘Pablo’, who was made by our Members in preparation for the ‘Fiesta’ party at the end of our trip to Mexico. He was used as a piñata and looked fabulous until of course he was broken to pieces! Our month in Mexico was very colourful and was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone! 30 | MSWA BULLETIN SPRING 2016

ALBANY OUTREACH NEWS CAROLINE CLARK-SMITH Want to know what is happening at the Outreach or make an appointment with our MS Nurse Maureen? Then give us a call on 9841 6651 and we will send out this month’s program. The annual Members Camp is on in Denmark in November. Places are limited so if you are interested in attending or need more information please give Sumit a call on 08 9365 4888. Thank you to everyone who has given us their feedback and their ideas on outings and activities for the group. We really value your feedback and are grateful for your input. We celebrated Volunteer Week in May with a luncheon sponsored by MSWA. It was a lovely get together and the first time we have had the opportunity and we are already looking forward to next year’s! Our small but dedicated group of volunteers help out with all sorts of fundraising activities and play a huge role in the annual Swim. So a big thank you. BEECHBORO OUTREACH NEWS GISELLE MARTIN, RESOURCE COORDINATOR Here at Beechboro, we are all very much looking forward to the warmer weather as it has definitely been way too cold this winter for our liking! We spent June trying to stay warm with a few wintery games like ‘snowball basketball’ and ‘air ice hockey’. We also enjoyed some nice warming curry lunches from our brilliant Brenda and her team! In July, we brought the glam to The Lodge and spent our days living it up in ‘Las Vegas’. We tested our luck with a roll of the dice and tried a hand or two of cards. Our last week finished with a photo booth, where fun props and a city backdrop provided a lot of fun and many unique keepsake photos! Christmas is fast approaching so if you have any suggestions for a suitable lunch venue please let us know. Perhaps somewhere we have been before or a new one; we are open to ideas. We would like to thank the MSWA staff who have visited from Perth, Gail, Sue and Lou, and Leonie from Bunbury. We are grateful for the time that you have taken to come down and update us on what is happening. We are waiting to hear about a visit from an OT so we will keep you posted. If you have an email account, you can send us a note at albany@mswa.org.au and we can add you to our mailing list and keep you updated on what is happening. In August we focused on the Rio Olympics, as we barracked for green & gold!! We even had our own ‘mini games’ going which included shooting, bowling, javelin and more. Go Australia! Sadly, we had to say goodbye to our Physiotherapy Manager, Marilyn, who retired after 23 years of service at the MSWA. We had a lovely farewell morning tea and showered her with gifts of appreciation from the Members and staff! Best of luck Marilyn and thank you! SOUTHSIDE OUTREACH GROUPS NEWS ANGIE WALLACE We all love a Christmas in July and our team at Southside didn’t disappoint! Lovely handmade decorations, a Christmas quiz, a delicious turkey lunch with all the trimmings and Santa made up the day! There was no snow however! Our Santa for the past nine years has been volunteer John. It was also John’s 80th birthday weekend, so instead of plum pudding we had John’s favourite - Black Forest cake complete with candles. We’ve enjoyed some interesting activities on Friday mornings such as – jewellery making, mosaics and sun catchers. In our ‘snapshot corner’ we’ve had experts from Wilson visiting to talk about subjects to help us in our MS journey: Sleep disorders, swallowing etc. Thanks to nurse Sandra along with physios/OTs and other specialists. We appreciate your time! Our physio area has added a Pilates machine and several Members are enjoying the benefits. Commencing shortly, we’ll have a new masseur for our Thursday morning sessions. Massages are very important to MS bodies. Brian and Sally are in Scotland for eight weeks, Trish and Rex are in Spain and UK visiting relatives and adding on a cruise down the Rhine! Angie and John are spending four weeks in Sydney with family in NSW and have family visiting from Japan. Jenny and husband are caravanning across Oz for a couple of months. Very impressive Jenny! Peter and Rose, and Doug and Anne have also been cruising in the past few months. We could be opening up the ‘Southside Travel Consultants Ltd’ division of MS! Just kidding! Looking forward to a few travel stories soon. MSWA BULLETIN SPRING 2016 | 31
